EPISODE K-403 5 O'CLOCK CHARLIE - by Larry Gelbart and Laurence Marks; Story by Keith Walker An inept North Korean pilot called "5 O'clock Charlie" by the 4077th personnel drops a mortar every day at 5 p.m. on a camouflaged ammunition dump. He always misses and the whole business has become something of a spectator sport. Hawkeye, Trapper, Blake, Father Mulcahy and Radar take bets on the distance of Charlie's misses. Frank, who takes war seriously, doesn't approve of betting and decides to fight back. He goes to Blake and requests an anti-aircraft gun. Blake is reluctant, but when General Clayton calls to see if he's won the pool, Henry mentions Frank's request. Clayton shows up to assess the situation, and as they watch "5 O'clock Charlie," he finally hits something — the general's jeep. Frank gets his gun and has three South Korean soldiers manning it. Hawkeye and Trapper discuss the problem with Phil Cardozo, the dentist, who says that if they get rid of the ammo dump, Charlie and Frank will have lost their purposes. First, Hawkeye and Trapper paint a bull's eye on some sheets covering the dump. With the help of Radar and a fake patient, they set back Frank's clock then call him into post-op for a consultation. When Frank hears Charlie, he rushes to his crew screaming orders but with the added confusion of Hawkeye and Trapper, the crew fires on the dump, blowing it up. Charlie, having dropped his mortar, thinks he destroyed the dump.
