EPISODE B-301 RAINBOW BRIDGE - by Larry Gelbart and Laurence Marks Once again, Hawkeye and Trapper have their trip to Tokyo postponed by incoming wounded. In the course of thirty-six hours of surgery, Hawkeye notices they're handling an unusual number of very light cases. He checks Frank's management of the casualties to find he's going by the book — Americans first, allies second and enemy last. Hawkeye wants those in immediate need of surgery to go first. When surgery is over, Hawkeye and Trapper go to Blake to say they're quitting. Blake tells them that nine captured G.I.'s need more medical attention than their Chinese abductors can handle. They're willing to surrender the G.I.'s to M*A*S*H provided a single vehicle with only doctors and a corpsman be sent. There are to absolutely no armaments on the vehicle, including sidearms. Hot Lips and Frank are convinced it's a trick, with an ambush awaiting anyone who goes. Hawkeye and Trapper volunteer, with Hot Lips finally persuading Frank to join them. It will look bad for him if he doesn't, but she gives him a tiny handgun for protection. As the M*A*S*H vehicle meets with the heavily guarded Chinese doctor, Frank gets nervous and pulls the gun. The doctor is furious the conditions were violated and refuses to turn over the G.I.'s. Luckily, Hawkeye persuades the American-educated doctor not to let the injured suffer because Frank is an idiot.
