EPISODE B-308 THE GENERAL FLIPPED AT DAWN - by Jim Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum Major General Steele, the new area commander, is about to arrive at the 4077th where he plans to spend a week. Henry Blake orders a sprucing up of the camp prior to Steele's arrival. Hawkeye is angry that the wounded G.I. Harrison is so young. He belongs back home at the soda fountain. He patches up Harrison then makes a date with Nurse Baker to meet in the mattress supply room later in the week. Steele, a grizzled war veteran, arrives: he's 68 and rigidly military. Steele inspects the ranks. He orders spit and polish Frank to trim the hairs in his nose and tells Hot Lips, "Gut in, chest out." "That's a quote from Pershing." he tells Blake. When Klinger comes sailing out of his tent in drag, Steele tells him, "Not now, Marjorie. I'm inspecting the troops." The next day as Steele goes to inspect the mattress supply room, he finds Hawkeye and Nurse Baker. Hawkeye makes a brilliant recovery, introducing himself as a member of the press. Steele assumes the reporter will be going back to the states and gives him a string of messages for his wife. Hawkeye tells Blake that Steele is psychotic. By this time, Steele is interviewing the helicopter pilot and when he learns that it takes twenty minutes to bring wounded in from the fighting, he orders the 4077th moved closer to the action. Steele wants to survey the area by helicopter, but Hawkeye has commandeered it to take Harrison to Seoul for intensive care. When the pilot returns. Steele holds an inquiry until it occurs to him to ask the pilot to sing. The next moment Steele is leading him in a 'way down South' number. Now everyone knows he's crazy. Weeks later, Hawkeye reads that Steele has been promoted and given a Pentagon post.
