Hawkeye and Trapper are sent to a surgical clinic in Tokyo. As soon as they arrive at the hotel they belly up to the bar. They stand out in a room populated by sprucely uniformed doctors. Soon they meet Dr. Borelli, who takes an interest in the newcomers. Borelll tells them the clinic will be worthwhile and will introduce lots of new surgical refinements. Hawkeye tells him their job is simple: just patch-up the wounded and send them to Tokyo General. They invite Borelli to Korea to see the amputations, typhus, filariasis and so on. Borelli, a man of sixty and veteran of two wars, returns to Korea with Hawkeye and Trapper. They take him to the Swamp and are about to have some martinis when the p.a. announces incoming wounded. Borelli joins the others in O.R. to observe, but immediately intervenes when Frank is about to amputate a crushed leg. That leg could be saved by an artery transplant. He's done one, and all that is necessary is a section of new artery. As the patient's leg won't last more than four or five hours, the race is on. Radar locates an artery three hours, round-trip, away. Hawkeye and Trapper return with the artery in time, but can't find Borelli. Finally he's located in the Swamp, not drunk but unable to perform surgery. Hawkeye must substitute, with Borelli guiding him through the transplant The operation is a success, but Hawkeye is very angry with Borelli, who says he didn't drink in WWI and only drank after work in WWII. Borelli wishes Hawkeye better luck in his third war. By the time Borelli is ready to leave, he and Hawkeye are on speaking terms again.
