Hawkeye gets a call from his father, but the connection is broken after the elder Pierce asks, "How and why?" A little later Digger Detmuller comes to Hawkeye with a death certificate listing him as dead! Now Hawkeye understands the mysterious phone call. He tries to call his father back, but all lines are tied up while Elsenhower is in Korea. B.J. has just the answer - a wake, which is a smashing success. Everyone says Hawkeye looks just like himself, and he says piously he's too young to die. Frank complains that the death certificate is just an excuse for Hawkeye to goof off. He's right since corpses can't do O.R. duty or stand for inspections. Hawkeye is quite cheerful about being dead until he discovers the dead don't get mail call or worse, they don't get paid. Capt. Pratt takes down all the details to establish that Hawkeye is alive. Until the paperwork is cleaned up he is an unperson. B.J. tells Hawkeye the wounded are coming and he is needed in surgery. Later, he manages to get through to his father and all is cleared up, including the problem of money. The elder Pierce will send an allowance for a while.
